The larva begins by making a linear, winding mine. This is abruptly enlarged into a whitish blotch, which later becomes wrinkled, resembling a Phyllonorycter mine. Upon exiting the mine, the larva typically rolls the leaf laterally, forming a cylindrical roll that incorporates most or all of the leaf. Some larvae, however, form a typical Caloptilia transverse cone (Eiseman 2025: 1802).
